When did skirts become something only for women to wear?
perpil asked:
at some point in history it was probably decided that skirts are for women, and pants are for men. when, and why?
I would appreciate answers with content that actually makes sense. thank you.
Many Characters from the past wore skirts and robes. Biblical characters, Roman soldiers, ancient Greeks, etc. So what happened that created the distinction?

According to Andrew Bolton, associate curator of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art: “The shift in attitude toward men in skirts began as early as the 14th century, which is when men and women’s clothes really began to look different; the effeminate stigma really is something fairly new, developed over the last 150 years as strict dress codes and gender rules were adopted with industrialization.”
