I would like to start an online clothing site for women of all sizes. but how do I get started?

LeesTwinSis asked:

If the owners of clothes and shoes stores are not designers then where do they their products from? How does it work? I would like to start an online clothing site for women of all sizes but I have no idea how to get started. Can someone shed some light on this matter?

people like to try clothing on to see how it fits and looks – very hard to sell online – especially if you are offering a wide variety of sizes – styles change every season and every year – you might get stuck with lots of unsold stuff and have to dump it at a loss – very risky type of business to do without a ton of money to get started and a very sophisticated (expensive to create and maintain) website

First off, I HIGHLY recommend taking a business class…or a few…before beginning anything!!
You can do this at your local community college. Buy many books on clothing stores and clothing businesses and read, read read!!
Since I don’t know where you live, I can only say that you will need to get a DBA, DBA in the newspaper, business license, seller’s permit, EIN, etc, before you do anything. This costs about $200+. The starting process is a long one…so get started asap.
If you do not design your clothes, you must buy from wholesalers.
Most will confirm that you have a business before letting you purchase from them. They will ask for your Seller’s Permit number.
To get online, you should higher a web designer. This costs $2000+ for something decent. Do not settle for anything. Get a logo, get everything you want or move on to the next designer! Try your best to get a web designer that offers the shopping cart in the one time fee!! If not, a shopping cart program will cost you over $30 a month. Of course, you will pay about $5+ a month for hosting…and $10 a year for the domain. Also, you will need a way to accept payment and that can be about $30+ a month.
You should get a PO Box.. which can be $100+ a year.
Email marketing is really important and its at least $30+ a month.

You will probably be needing boxes, shipping supplies, a clothing steamer, business cards, etc.

If you need more information I recommend finding a member of SCORE and speaking with them one on one.

    Good Luck!!
